I have a lap top which I want to dive to someone, before doing so I want to clean all the items off it, I know how to remove thr programs of it but want to ensure that I do not leave work related items on it which I have down loaded , than backed up onto USB but do not want to leave any trail.

I think the only 100% way is to replace the HDD. As that is not practical the next step is to re-install the operating system. This erases and reformats the HDD (but information could still be recovered from it by a specialist). If you are certain the recipient is not going to take it directly to the specialist then that's your best bet. Even this may not be an option if you don't have your installation discs and are not sure what to do (someone could do it for you - a pal perhaps). The only other way is to remove stuff the best way you can - running as many "cleanup" utilities to finalise.

Hi 753Df do you have some restoration disc's that came with the laptop? You could restore it to the way it was when you first got it it will erase anything on it and put back only the original progs that it came with.

Hi if you have no discs the best option is to use something like Eraser {FREE} when you have erased everything you don;t want,

You can then clean the unused disc space,

This makes it very hard to recover anything,
