Chopped sound with Skype and Quicktime

I am running XP home on Sony VGN-A417M. When I 'listen' to Skype or an online video with Quicktime I get chopped and crackly sound. I am told by Skype 'listner' that my voice is 'perfect'. I have 2 meg broadband with other PC on network, other PC works fine. I do not get problem with other media players. Help. I am not aware of anything else 'wrong'. Help!

generally cause by something else running in the background, ie a p2p prog or some such, try using it with nothing else in use.

Try the Skype website's guide to setting up the sound:

I just use my system's onboard sound with a headset.
