choosing usb or firewire external hard drive

  tugtac 11:56 18 Nov 2009

I need an external hard drive to transfer my mini dv tapes to a hard drive. I have both a firewire and a usb2 connection I do not know which is more suitable for the intended purpose taking cost into account.
Any advice? thank you

USB2 transfers up to 480Mbps

Firewire A = 400Mpbs and Firewire B = 800Mbps.

So if you have Firewire B, which is the small rectangular connection as opposed to A which is rectangular with one end being rounded, on your machine then in terms of speed this is the one to go for, however -

Not all machines by any stretch, have 800 but virtually all machines have USB2, so in terms of portability USB2 is the best choice.

I have an external hd with a Akasa Integral caddy which has connections for firewire and usb2, plus internal fittings for ide and sata hd's. It's the best one I've used click here
