Chkdsk on bootup

A friend's PC on starting up came up with a message about the HDD needing to be checked for consistency and then itself ran Chkdisk which showed it was recovering files. It then rebooted itself and all seems ok.
Is this a sign that the drive could be on its way out?

how old is the drive,i would think its a warning to backup data you might need now, i,ve had this sort of thing before and ran a windows based utilities to check for drive errors and it came up with some bad clusters,so i saved what i could, bought a new drive, made the dodgy one a slave drive, needless to say it lasted about another month a died
