chip fan fail?

My computer works fine after I have restarted it after receiving this warning message when it's turned on

" chip fan fail or speed too low "

What's that all about? How can the fan fail or be too low a speed? The fan seems to work ok and nothing seems to be affected. The only problem is that I have to restart the computer after the message. Many thanks.

The fan can fail just as any other electric motor can fail (but if it had, the component it cools would more than likely be kaput by now). It can slow down if the bearings become dry or if the whole thing gets clogged with dust. Might be worth doing a bit of housekeeping inside the case.
