Checking my email abroad

I will go to Japan next week.

Can anyone recommend a cheapish (£100 - £200) piece of kit I can buy (maybe a PDA or mobile phone) that will allow me to check my AOL and hotmail email when I'm over there? It would be a bonus if I could do some limited surfing with it as well.

I would have thought that you would need a local ISP account to do this. The best way might be to use an Internet Café or similar. I assume these are available in Japan. It depends how long you intend to stay.

Maybe someone who travels to Japan might know more.

Short term: Internet Case
Or take a Laptop and use Hotel's service. I believe a lot hotle got internet service.

You can do with Mobile phone, but it could be very expensive, e.g. 80p a miute because you are roaming.

Long term, sign up a local service.

I've used a Psion M505 with a Psion wired (as opposed to wireless) modem adaptor to pick up my AOL emails in the US. You can get a list of local access numbers, and download software for your PDA, off the AOL site, but you may need to phone their help line to verify that they are PDA compatible in the countries you're interested in.
