Checking laptop battery charge

  Newuser1280 19:22 23 Jan 2006

My Acer Travelmate 240 switches off (with a 'click')after about 5 mins when running on the battery. I get no warnings (although I have set up Windows XP home to provide them)and the power manager icons tell me the battery is fully charged. The battery is 3 years old. Is the problem likley to be a knackered battery or (clutching at straws)a fault in the computer's hard/software?

If your battery has lasted 3 years, you have done well.

As you say it only lasts 5 mins. It's probably fully charged. at that point.

After about 600 charges or about 2-3 years, whichever is the sooner if would have reduced from it's original 1.5 hrs. (I'm guessing it's an li ion.)
To less than 10min.

It hasn't got time or strength to operate the warning.

All the best.

You need a new battery. If it works OK on the mains without the Battery, that confirms it

PS if you are in the house most of the time do what I have done, Get a New Battery put in plastic bag and put in fridge at half charge. I have done this from new, and only fit the battery if need it to go out with like on Holidays. I Run it on mains
