Checkdisk wont go away

  RE1772 20:24 04 Jul 2007

Everytime i start my computer, Check/ Scan disk kicks in and wants to check my computer for errors.
Sometimes i let it, it finishes and says that there are no errors, starts XP and all is well until the next restart.
It will ofcourse allow me to abort before it starts but it is getting frustrating.
More recently and occasionally, the computer fails to boot once the check has run

Any ideas? Thanks

Try this:

First click Start> Run> bring up a command prompt by typing in "CMD" and type

fsutil dirty query C:

This queries the drive, and may tell you that it is dirty. Next, type

The X tells Windows to NOT check that particular drive on the next reboot. At this time, manually reboot your computer, it should not do a Chkdsk and take you directly to Windows.

Once Windows has fully loaded, bring up another CMD prompt and do a Chkdsk manually by typing

Chkdsk /f /r C:

This should take you through 5 stages of the scan and will unset that dirty bit. Finally, type

fsutil dirty query C:

and Windows will confirm that the dirty bit is not set on that drive.
