Check Disk started by itself

  mermaid25 20:50 25 Feb 2006

when I switched on the pc about 15 mins ago, before the welcome screen appeared, there was a blue screeen saying
'Checking file system on C
the type of file is NTFS
one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency.
you may cancel the disk check but it is strongly advised that you continue.
Windows will now check the disk.
Deleting index entryCAW54RKL.bin
in (Something) $I30 of file 23669
(sorry can't read my own scribble)
recovering orhaned file CAQRK 9AF.bin
into directory file.....' (I could not get anymore as it was too quick for me to copy)

I have had this pc for 3 years and never seen this type of thing before, so forgive my ignorance.

is this okay or do I have problems that I don't know about?

I may not answer after 9.10 as I'm gonna watch CSI NY.
thanks guys, if you can help me:0)

You can occasionally get a disk check on startup if Windows has detected a problem. If it's a rare event then usually nothing to worry about. If it happens on a regular basis then download a disk testing tool form the manufacturer and run that (usually on startup from a boot floppy).

have you installed or deleted anything recently
windows was running check disc to rectify a problem which it has now apparently done.
Unless it wants to run check disc each time you start up don't worry

I'm reassured now....only wanted to check emails...thought I was gonna have major probs!

Uninstalled Norton and installed AVG about 6 days ago

Thanks for your help

It seems to be due to minor file corruption problems. You may find that you can now see a file/files in Windows Explorer with a name something like FILEXXXX.CHK which are windows attempts to recover the data. As I mentioned, usually nothing to worry about unless this occcurs frequently.

As others say, if chkdsk is a one off no probs but do a search for 'norton' and Symantec' to see if anything was left lying around

If it keeps doing this you have a dirty bit set ! Post back for advice.

  mermaid25 09:48 26 Feb 2006

Morning guys
switched on without any probs
what's a dirty bit set?
hope it doesn't involve more housework!!

Did a search for 'norton' and 'Symantec' found lots of text documents for spyware scans, 2 reg entries (one reglocal one reguser) but the path had spybot in it,so am presuming thats okay.
also 4 norton antispam folders,(thinking I should delete those).
lots of setup files that are written in blue(why?)
thanks again:0)

If you have uninstalled Norton,it does leave behind redundant files.
Running ccleaner will tidy this up for you.
