changing xp serial number

can anyone tell me if you have xp pro with service pack 2 installed and, you change the serial number to an xp home edition would it cause a problem.
i purchased this machine with xp pro it now turns out to be an illegal copy or something of that nature. i purchased xp home legal copy i want to just change the number without a new install, do you think i would cause a problem

I don't think it can be done; you will have to do a clean install.

Otherwise you would have XP Pro for the price of Home.

It would almost certainly fail the WGA tests and therefore not allow you to update windows so you would be no better off.

use the Files and settings transfer wizard to copy files and settings to another HDD or partition.

Then use the new windows CD to delete the old version and install the Home version. The wizard can then restore all you old settings.

YTou may also like to tell Microsoft where you got it as they have an interest in illegal/pirated software.
