changing o/s help

im planning to change my mums old compaq to xp from win 98, but ive heard i need a low level formating programe, is this true and if so where could i get it dificult

Create a "Windows 98 Startup Disk" or just boot from the XP disk, but an average Win98 computer will struggle to use Windows XP..

Windows XP needs at least 256mb RAM (for best performance), at least 1.5Gb for just the typical installation and plays hell on a old CPU....

Then there is all the new user interface that can slow your system down (you can disable it, but you have to boot into the system first)....

You also should format the drive into NTFS format, as this format is best for WinXP's security features...

How do you know that her computer meets the speck for XP. May be better sticking with 98 She knows how that works
