Changing IDE & SATA cables

  njl555 20:07 04 Jan 2006

Have bought some new cables for my case which are round IDE and are neon same as SATA cable.
Can i turn off the computer and disconnect these cables and fit the new ones and start it up again, or will i have to do something else?
Hope someone can help.
Many thanks Neil

If you connect everything up in exactly the same way, they will just work.

Be very careful what you brush up against when you stick your hands in the case though. Don't want to fry anything with static, especially the HDDs themselves; damage an HDD and it takes a while to show up in the form of premature failure. An anti-static strap is a good idea.

When you turn it off - you need to turn off at the mains - not just power down. Simply powering down leaves power to the motherboard, and moving cables with power on is a sure way to cause problems.
