How do I change the default program/download destination from local disc c to local disc d or even to an external HDD so that I don't have to custom install etc to change location

1. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
2. Find ProgramFilesDir whose default should be C:\Program Files
3. Change this to whatever directory you wish. D:\Program Files for example.

Remember you have to reboot for your changes to show.

Hi Mat Alan
I checked box to say resolved but it isn't. I have followed your instructions as far as first line but can't find ProgramFilesDir

Create it then, tonyt1151. Go to that "CurrentVersion" folder and in the righthand pane, right-click and choose New > String Value, call it "ProgramFilesDir" (without the quotes) and set it's value to the folder you wish, D:\Program Files for example, as MAT ALAN suggested. To set the value double-click on the new string value and enter the value in the Value Data field, click OK and exit the registry.
