CDRom drive stopped reading disks

I have just bought my wife an Ipod Nano and I have been putting music on from Cds. For no good reason the CD has stopped reading disks. The little disk icon comes up next to the cursor and nothing happens. When I go to my computer, and click on the D: drive it prompts me to insert a disk as if there was not one there. I have tried uninstalling the Sony CDRom and then restarting to allow XP to reinstall it but it still does not read disks. It will not read data disks either. Any ideas?

It sounds like the read laser has failed in the drive.

As you have already uinstalled and reinstall the CD try uninstall the IDE channel the drive is on and restarting. or change the IDE cable.

If no luck then drive laser failed, for £30 for a new DVD writer they are not worth repairing.
