CD/DVD fault

  FFox 10:45 02 Dec 2006

My CD rom & DVD-R are not recognised by windows. Both are in BIOS. When a disk is inserted both appear to spin up then stop. None of my programs or explorer see a disk and give message, insert disk. I've tried reloading CD/DVD & IDE drivers. Anyone any ideas.

Try uninstalling both from Device Manager and rebooting.

Windows will install the basic CDROM drivers again and Find New Hardware.

Also check that the connections are tight.

No CD/DVD or CD-ROM access is missing error Code 19, Code 31, Code 32, Code 39, or Code 41
Try this if the optical drives are not appearing in My Computer or Device Manager.
(This is sometimes caused by the removal of Roxio or other writing software.)

Run regedit and navigate to registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
Highlight it and in the right pane, find the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values.
Highlight each one in turn, right click and delete them.
Close regedit and restart the computer.
If in doubt make a restore point before making changes.

Thanks guys, but neither of these have worked. I can see the drives in BIOS & Explorer, Device manager says working OK, CDs spin up, but when I look nothing shows in either drive.

Try Uninstalling the Secondary IDE Channel from Device Manager (IDE/ATA Controllers) and rebooting.

Again Windows will reinstall.

Thanks Stuartli, but still saying insert disk when there is one in.

I don't know if this is worth a try.
