CD/DVD drive will not function

  Quilljar 11:26 16 Sep 2005

My DVD drive used to work, ( Win XP with Svc Pack 2 up-to-date) but for some months now, although its light flashes and its properties claim that it is working. I always get a message asking me to insert a disc, every time I actually do insert a disc. I can't help feeling that it is some small thing I have overlooked. Any suggestions gratefully R/C.

I would suggest uninstalling in Device Manager, re-boot, and Windows should find it and re-install it.

For a starter a CD drive cleaner- as for for CD players- CD with a brush/pad attached and a bottle of fluid.

1. clean the drive as above

2. try a different disc

3. Uninstall CD/DVD drivers in device manager and reinstall

4. Uninstall and reinstall IDE channel drive is on and reboot and reinstall channel

5. Check IDE cable is FULLY inserted on drive and at motherboard.

6. Try another / new IDE cable

7. Buy a new drive the laser is US
