CD writer writes but doesn't read!

I have a problem with my CD/DVD writer. I have been trying to write to it and on several occasions the data was written using various methods and programs, but when i checked the disc it had nothing on it, yet the computer said it was full. I have just realised using my other DVD read only drive that the data is being written, but for some reason the writer won't show it.

When i put a blank cd in the writer it shows as a cd drive, when finished writing it shows as DVD ram drive.

Any ideas please?

Maybe try an update driver - in Device Manager go to DVD/CD Drives - right click on listed drive and select Update Driver Software.

There is a possibility that the read laser on the drive is broken.

As far as I'm aware a DVD writer uses two lasers, one for CD and one for DVD. If DVD disks work in the drive and CD disks don't then it may suggest that the CD laser is broken.

Can I hitch a ride on this thread please, which doesn't appear resolved?

I have the same problem - my question:- is the CD element repairable or will my writer be heading for the scrapyard? My CD/DVD writer has not been used as an "Entertainment" unit.

Thanks hopefully for good news advice !!

No CD/DVD or CD-ROM access is missing error Code 19, Code 31, Code 32, Code 39, or Code 41
Try this if the optical drives are not appearing in My Computer or Device Manager.
(This is sometimes caused by the removal of Roxio or other writing software.)

Highlight it and in the right pane, find the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values.
Highlight each one in turn, right click and delete them.
Close regedit and restart the computer.
If in doubt make a restore point before making changes.

Many thanks for your quick response. I downloaded as recommended but the "Read me First" warnings are dire and scare the pants off this oldtimer !

Will wait for my son's next visit and he will know what to do. My computer use is limited to surfing and emailing unfotunately. Keep up your good works, and thanks again.
