Please Help. I have very little knowledge or understanding about my PC But for some reason the DVD-R will not work. I can play a CD and load a CD ROM but can not play a DVD or load a DVD ROM. My PC is 18months old on windows xp and all working fine untill two weeks back where this problem started. What can I do?
The CD-W RW and DVD-W is all in one driver.

Try cleaning the drive, you can get a drive disk cleaner for about a fiver from the likes of Woolys or Tesco, if this fails then you probably need a new drive, if its under warranty contact them if not buy a new one, about £20-25. Alternatively if you PC is reasonably fast consider a DVDRW, DVD writers can be got for about the £40 mark, including P&P.

Further to what you were saying about it reading CDs but not DVDs, the reason for this is the drive has 2 sets of lasers, one for CDs and one for DVDs, so one can work but not the other and that is what I think has happened in your case.

As above

but first check IDE cable has not come loose at drive or motherboard.

change the cable £3 before buying a new DVDRW
