CD RW Problem

  chrisbenwalker 15:05 05 Aug 2007

I have a CDRW and a DVD RW on my pc. Up until last week, both worked fine, although now my CD does not want to know. Each time you put in a cd, the light on the cd drive flashes on and off, and you cant access the disc inside.
The HD light also comes on as if it is working on something, although the pc just locks up and I have to restart.
The mouse responds, so its trying to do something, but just cant handle it.
I have checked all I can think of in device manager, and checked that nothing is amiss, and all says the device is woprking correctly.
I have even restored the pc from a backup I had when all was good, but still no luck.
Could it be a faulty drive now, or dirty perhaps?

Sounds like the laser is giving up.
You could try a lens cleaner and see what happens.

If not just run cd on your dvd drive

Try Uninstalling the CD rewriter from Device Manager and Rebooting (after checking the leads and cables for firm connections).

Windows will Find New Hardware and reinstall the basic CDROM driver.

If this doesn't work then it is most likely, as postie24 observers, that the laser has gone kaput.

You can buy a new top brand DVD rewriter to match your current one for well under £20 these days.
