CD Rom drive not being recognised

  Acornone 20:02 22 Dec 2004

My laptop stopped recognising a cd in the drive about eight months ago. On inserting a cd the drive ran for a few seconds and stopped. I took the laptop to my professional man who knows and after observing the symptons he removed the drive to look into it further. After a few days he said that the news was bad and a new drive was required at a cost of £250. This I knew was cheaper than one from Acers,as I had checked myself. I told him to go ahead and after a week he turned up full of confidence, fitted the drive and of coarse it did not work. Just the same symptons again. I then considered at buying a new laptop as the prices were getting closer at 1/3 the cost of a new one. Before I commited I put the laptop in the hands of an Acer repair specialist in Swindon. After 10 days they too decided a new drive was required at £450. I then decided that at that it was worth my while to get another Laptop at £650 so I am now the owner of two Acers. Now a couple of weeks ago I was playing about with cd in the drive. I must have switched off leaving the cd in the drive. When I next booted up I found that the cd in the drive ran. I can now run the cd drive providing I boot up with a cd in situ. This proves that the cd drive is servicable. Can anyone please advise on what I can do to get Windows to recognise the cd drive in the normal way.

The first thing most people would try is to go into Device Manager, and delete the drive, then reboot to let Windows re-detect the drive. This has been known to resolve some issues such as yours.

I'am a bit confused to whats been happening you and not sure of your symptoms (besides being ripped off in my view) Try the following to see if it will correct, Windows to recognise the cd drive in the normal way. Small download then run it.

I cannot get a response from your Click Link on your posting.

My problem is : Boot up computer. Put in CD - drive runs up for about ten seconds then stops - Double click on drive in My computer and disk is not seen and will not run up.

Switch off computer-start the boot up. open drive immediately put in CD and from then on the cd is seen and for that session any number of cd.s can be read.

Go into BIOS and redetect the Drive, then remove from Device Manager and reboot
