Hi Folks,

My CD Rewriter appears to have developed a fault. When I put a CD in the machine makes a sound for a few seconds and the light flickers but then the noise stops and the light goes out. If I open up the icon on the desktop there is nothing there.

A hardware fault do you think?

Many thanks for your help.

could be but have you checked in [right click] my computer - properties - hardware - device manager and seen if there is a yellow mark against your cd drive.

Does the drive appear in My Computer ?

Have you checked device Manager for yellow exclaimation marks

Device manager:

Start/controlPanel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/Expand the cd/dvd you see any yellow exclaimation marks.

Have you uninstalled any cd/dvd burning software recently ?

It also may be you have a loose connection.

Or the Laser is dying.

Im assuming your os is xp

Hi Guys,

No yellow exclamation marks

No softeware uninstalled recently.

Is there a CD one can play to clean the laser or am I being fanciful?

Kind regards.

Does the drive appear in My Computer Parkhead.

I have used a dvd lens cleaner cd in the past, not sure if its good practice to admit i use it in the household gadgets and the car...hasn't done me no harm yet !

asda do cd cleaners

  parkhead 22:05 29 Aug 2006

Hi Skidzy,

Yes, it does appear under Device Manager.
Do you think it is worth me trying a CD cleaner?

Hi WJRT - thank you for that info.

Kind regards.

Replacement writers, perhaps even a DVD writer, would be so cheap to buy it's not really worthwhile spending money, time and effort getting an errant device to work.

  skidzy 22:13 29 Aug 2006

I see no problem in trying a cleaner Parkhead.
I know you say its listed in device manager, but is it listed in:

Start/My computer

Im guessing it should be as it is listed in device Manager and shows that it should be working correctly.

Maybe a silly question...does the cd play at all ?

Hi Sidzy,

Yes it is listed in My Computer etc. The CD works properly in the DVD ROM Drive but not in the CD Rewriter Drive.

Hi CDstowe,

I would buy a DVD Rewriter BUT am I correct in thinking it would not work off my USB Port 1 and that it needs a USB Port 2 or would it work off a USB 1 but just be slower?

Kind regards.
