CD re-writer problem

  jz 20:08 23 Feb 2004

I've had this problem now for a few years, ever since I installed my CD re-writer. Roughtly 50% of bootups are very slow, and when they are slow, after boot-up, the CD re-writer and the CD-ROM do not work (there is a red line through them in the notification area. Re-starting the PC always, without fail, fixes the problem. But shutting down the PC then starting it up suffers from the problem I've described roughly 50% of the time. Any ideas?

What operating system are you using. What cd burning software are you using and did this come with the cd writer. When you say "in the notification area" - do you mean the quick start menu (by the clock).

Sorry about the late reply. Thanks colrobs & woodchip for replying.

I have Windows 98, and use Adaptec which came with the re-writer. When I say notification area, I mean the area next to the clock. I am not leaving CDs in the drive.
