CD-R to close or not to close

When burning a continuing series of files to CD-R it is left open so that the process can continue
However when it is full - is it wise then to 'close' it?
Does it matter?
Will affect the durability of the recording?

I thought that if you wanted to run the disc in an ordinary CD ROM drive or play it in a CD player, (i.e. not the re-write drive it was recorded on), you HAD to close, or finalise, the disc otherwise it won't work?

Once you close the session the danger of overwriting the disc is eliminated, so it is always a good idea to close a completed cd compillation.

i will just echo the other replies, when you are sure you have finished writing to the disc, close the session then it will be readable in any cdrom drive.
