HELP. Windows 2000 Pro. I have been messing about with my machine and seem to have lost the use of my CD drive. Says no disc in it when I want to play music CD.

right click my computer

device manager

Is it listed there?

Does it have a yellow exclamation mark?

If yes to either, right click on it and choose uninstall.

Reboot and windows should reinstall it.

If "messing about" involved internal surgery you have probably disconnected the drive.

Does My Computer show the CD and its drive letter?

Thanks for your reply. I now know that I have a Samsung Combo SM-304B DVD/CD-ROM drive which says it is working properly.

Have you tried removing it from the device manager and rebooting?

If you can define "messing about" it might be easier to identify the problem and solution.

Diodorus Siculus - I have uninstalled and rebooted. Still the same. Anything else you can think of please?.

faulty data cable, the flat one

I wouldn't be so quick to blame hardware failure if it was working before you'd been "messing about".

As keewaa asks, can you explain what you were doing?

Can you load software from a cd/dvd?

Does the drive spin when a CD is inserted?
