CD drive not reading

  Vashti 11:48 03 Jul 2006

I am running windows xp sp2 and after copying a cd successfully my cd writer drive will not read any cd at all. It will not even pick up and play my music cd's. Anyone know the reason please.

Is the drive built in to the PC?

Are all the connections good and pushed right in?

Try Uninstalling the drive in Device Manager and rebooting.

Windows will detect New Hardware and reinstall the basic CDROM driver.

If this doesn't work then either the connections are not fitting correctly (doubtful if it copies) or the laser is on the way out.

Congratulations, Stuartli. You diagnosed my problem in a few words. I did as you said and the cd drive did not work. It has taken Dell over 2 hours on the phone testing to decide the cd drive needs replacing.!! We both knew it was unusable didn't we? I am to get a new cd drive from Dell. Many thanks and also thanks to Nick
