CD audio playback issues

I'm running a relatively new HP compaq laptop with 1gb ram, a 1.44ghz celeron m processor and windows xp.

Recently i have been unable to play cd's correctly. Software discs work fine and cd's can be ripped and burnt as normal, it is just cd audio playback that is a problem.

Wma and MP3 files can be played from hard drive without any glitches however when i play a cd the sound is glitchy.

The problem is the same in both Windows Media Player and Realplayer. When playing a cd the cpu usage hovers between 10% and 20%.

Viruses/spyware & adware are not factors as i keep my pc squeeky clean, scanning often as well as defragmenting regularly.

Does anybody know hoe this problem can be remedied. Any help would be appreciated.
