I reinstalled XP on my Dell due to an irreparable error. Now, when i attempt to restore my files/folders etc. in Back utility it only restores bits and bobs and nothing works properly.

Question - what backup software are you using?

At this time, I can only suggest that it may be a result of one three things:

1) Corrupted data source (CD-RW, flash memory, or whatever)

2) Malfunctioning backup software

3) A slight change in Windows configuration or installed software - for example, using the XP File and Settings Transfer Wizard as a means of backup/restore does not work properly if you haven't loaded the same software. The settings file will, in this instance, fail to load.

I made the back up a few months ago. The Backup/Restore goes through the motions, takes about 40mins, says it was successful but it looks nothing like my original settings and nothing works

When I had Dell OEM, I could never get Windows backup to work properly, in fact I bought Acronis true image which worked fine and saved my life many times.I think it was something to do with the way DEll loaded the HDD.
