I've just bought a specialised Tai Chi video from the US and when it loads I get the message
"there is no mpeg decoder available or the MPEG decoder does not support Video CD format"

This happens in both the CD and DVD drives.

What should I be looking for in the way of software?
Is it something special or has my new machine just got bits missing

Thank you

Do you have a VCD/SVCD compatible DVD software player installed? This usually solves the problem for VCD and SVCD. Not certain about CVD. If the codec is installed with the software your video should be playable through Win Media Player as well as the DVD player/DVD software.

Also you might like to have a read here. A seems to suggest that the DVD player software will recognise the encoding.

Sorry about that - should read Brian not Brain. Nothing further from the truth.

If you need a software DVD player you might start here at Intervideo WinDVD.
Don't think it is free but might be a trial available.

That's for help so far.

I tried Power DVD and it got through the titles but then crashed with an out of bound page fault.

The disc itself is using a program called combi.exe which asks you to choose between video and kareoke . Combi fails with the mpeg message
but this seems to be generated because it is looking for a *dat extension in the win.ini file.

MY win ini does not seem to have anything like that at all

The disk may be more specialised that you think it is.

Windows Media player has the facility to play MPEG and thus video CDs. Nothing extra is needed.

Regarding combi.exe, this is downloadable from click here apparently.

There is something I find a bit dubious about all this, don't know what but I make absolutely no promises that the download is what it says it is.
