Assuming that this is Windows XP

Start, Run, type in

sfc /scannow

and click OK. You may be asked to insert your Windows CD.

Process Explorer from click here
is better than Task Manager. If you use this it is potentialy easier to spot non legitimate processes as the company name and a full path and command line are included in the list. In options it can be set to replace Task Manager.

tried process explorer wont start due to symbols are not currently cofigured it says you must configure symbols in order to view thread start and the stack information. HELPPPPP!!!

try clicking 'start/control panel/administrative tools/event viewer' click on 'system' and 'applications' and then click on anything listed with a red x, this will be an error. there may be a link to microsoft for an explaination and a fix if available. note the times and dates of your task manager errors and cross reference them to those displayed here. may help a bit.

you can also look up any errors dislplayed by typing then into the 'search(KB)' box click here using key words or the exact error.

Task master can also be activated by pressing Esc whilst holding down Ctrl+Shift.
