can't open Excel file

  hilvalen 09:53 12 Sep 2006

I created an Excel workbook a while ago that I have accessed a few times but now can't open. I have virus scanned it and it reports no problem. I have also tried to open it through Works, but no success.

Any ideas please?

What happens when you try to open it?

A message comes up "excel cannot access coachinglog.xls. The document may be read only or encrypted". I have not (deliberately) saved it as read only or encrypted it.

Is this on a network or a single home PC?

Is it on a CD? - if so copy it onto the hard drive first and turn off "Read Only" in Properties.

The file is on a single home pc (laptop).

Make sure the file's properties are not set to Read Only.

If you are trying to open it by double clicking on the file try instead starting Excel and use File > Open.

The properties are not set to Read Only - even so I have tried OpenAs Read Only.

I ahve tried to open it in a number of ways - from windows explorer and from with Excel. No joy.

Thanks VoG, but I had already tried these as recommended in an earlier post. Am I going to have to resign myself to losing the data?
