Can't get rid of sstsr.dll - Any ideas?

Hi all, I've just been sorting out a friends computer and although I've managed to rid the machine of literally hundreds of spyware/malware/trojans/other nasties, I've not been able to remove this one.

SpywareGuard keep warning me of a request for BHO change, but as I know it's a dodgy item, I don't want to accept it. Thing is, when I refuse the change, it just keeps popping up.

I've searched google, and tried the removal processes suggested there (although there really aren't many references to this issue).

Any other ideas?

I can see the file in the WINDOWS\System32 directory, however I'm not able to delete it, and Spybot, Adaware, Eqido, A2 and AVG have been unsuccessful in deleting it.

Thanks. I've looked at each of those already, without any joy.

Didn't happen to use Winfixer by any chance, follow thread it may help without posting a Highjackthis log..

HI, yes, I have a Hijackthis log, and can see the '02' entry listed (sstsr.dll), however following the instructions to the 'T' didn't shift the problem, so I'm not sure whether it's a variant or something.

About WinFixer, as I don't know whether my friends have used it I can't be sure, but it's entirely possible. They're not in the slightest bit PC literate :D

Winfixer is probably the root of your problem it is a rather naff piece of software that is neither use nor ornament..
