Sounds like a dodgy hard drive to me. Is it making funny noises?

HD is not noisy.
Any other ideas?

Well, the bios looks to the hard drive for the OS, and if it can't see the HDD, that suggests a problem there. But have you changed anything in the bios - is the machine looking to the DVD drive or similar?

If it got as far as the logon screen, not a hardware fault. Even if it only booted, I would suspect software but could be media left in the drive (floppy or DVD). Otherwise, your C:\ drive has become non-bootable or your OS has been damaged. Try running an OS repair.

Just a thought - have you tried booting last successful boot up?

Start the computer and start hitting the F8 key and choose safe mode.

When there, go to a previous restore point

Will try safe mode and report back later.

tried to restore in safe mode, comp. comp just sat there after choosing a restore point (sys. check point) and after a while started beeping.

so you can get into safe mode then?
