can't download - is harddrive/motherboard broken?

My neighbour's laptop one day stopped downloading; got really slow to start up with 'scandisk' always wanting to run; sound crackling, no flash. PC repair shop said it needed (can't remember which) new motherboard/harddrive and hundreds of pounds. PC whizz kid came today, managed somehow to get it to download again -even downloaded flash and firefox and limewire. We switched it off - and when it switched on again, it was just the same. It said firefox and limewire were corrupted and wouldn't run; it won't download anything again - system restore no help. So -is the PC shop right? Is it a hardware issue of several hundred pounds? Answers by payday please!!

The key word in there is 'limewire'.

It is probably riddled with malware. Run HJT click here and post the log on this specialised forum click here

..apparently; he was paying for it, though I don't know whether that makes it any safer? I will go to specialised forum thanks!

ad aware spbybot, all say nothing malicious there - maybe the PC shop is right about the faulty IDE controller and harddisc after all - but I don't understand why they are said to be working properly in device manager.

If the PC has a recovery partition, it's fairly easy to run a destructive recovery to restore it back to when it came from the factory. If this works it proves it was a software problem. If it doesn't have a recovery partition it will take a bit longer with a restore disc or a reinstall disc.
