I'm trying to do a clean install of XP SP2 on a friends PC, but it won't let me.I can get as far as accept licence agreement and then get an error message:-

Problem detected windows has shut down to prevent damage
driver_IRQL_NOT LESS_OR_EQUAL
STOP:0x000000D1 (0x019AE526,0x00000007,0x00000000,0XF988f6E3)

He bought the PC from Tiny just before they went bust. The preinstalled XP SP2 has never worked correctly from day one.
Recently his PC started rebooting at random so I tried to use system restore, after which his PC wouldn't boot into windows at all.I had to use his reload disk to resolve this.
He has now bought a new XP SP2 oem disk for me to install, but I can't, for the above reasons.
I tried a different PSU and memory to no avail.
I also fitted a FDD so that I could install his raid controller drivers, this seems to be working ok.

System detail:- 3400XP Athlon, 200GB WDC HDD, MSI 6741 motherboard, 1GB DDR, Pioneer 111 DVD writer, DVD Rom, nvidia 6600GT AGP graphics.

What can I try next ?
many thanks Gazza.

Might be worth performing a full/thorough format on the drive first.

This is the same problem that I had with my Tiny pc.

atapi.sys-Address F988F6E3 base at F988E000,

Ensure hard drive and CD/ DVD drive IDE cables are fully inserted at both the drive and the motherboard end.

The HDD is SATA not IDE,but I will check the DVD drives IDE.
Thanks Fruit Bat.

I downloaded Dban floppy drive version and tried to extract it to a floppy, but the file is too big.

Friut Bat Many Many thanks.
I changed the IDE cables for the optical drives and windows is now in the process of doing a clean install. No error messages.
I will tick this as resolved once the process is complete.

Thanks again Fruit Bat.
