I was doing some security checks on our PC today and wanted to see if it needed defragmenting so I clicked on Analyze but got the following message

Disk defragmenting has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume :(C:)
Please run Chkdsk /f

Can someone please be kind enough as to explain what this is, how dow I stop it coming on and how can I defragment.

Many thanks

Go to Start menu/Accessories, Command Prompt.
In the black box, type

chkdsk /F

press return (note the space between chkdsk and /F)

You may see a message saying Chkdsk will run next time you reboot. Reboot and let it check the disk.

That ought to allow you to defrag.

Your advice has worked and the PC is now happily defragmenting. Many thanks. :)

All was well until I restarted and a blue screen came on and did and Chkdsk.

Why is it doing that now?

If it does it more than once, may be a problem, otherwise it could just be a one-off.

When turning on this PC we (not everytime) often get the blue screen on and a Chkdsk starts. Why does it do this? It is more annoying than anything else. Is there anything that we can do to stop this happening?
