Can't connect to network printer when logging on

Hi all,
There is a network HP printer installed on the server and all works OK for most PC's. The problems come from some laptops that loose the printer when the user logs onto their desktop. At this stage, the user isn't logging onto the domain, just their own desktop on the laptop. They can use the internet and see the network but then lose the printer. If they browse for the printer on the server and then 'right click and connect' they can print.
Does anyone know of a way to force a permanent connection or should it be a case of making each user log on to the domain?
