Can't complete XP installation

I'm trying to install XP Home.
I install the CD.
The computer starts from the CD.
I format the hard drive.
Everything goes OK until the computer reboots.
When it reboots, it starts up with "Windows" on the monitor with the scrolling bar beneath it.

After a couple of seconds, the monitor goes into standby, and the installation seems to stop. All the fans and lights on the desktop are still on, but the CD drive won't open. I have to hold down the power switch to switch the computer off at this stage.

I've tried this several times but the monitor goes into standby at the same point during installation each time. I've tried changing the graphics card, but still get the same problem.

Anyone know what's likely to be wrong?

Delete what drivers?
There's no Windows installation on the hard drive.

s99Raj,

enter the bios and ensure the first boot device is cd/dvd, and disable all others.

"When it reboots, it starts up with "Windows" on the monitor with the scrolling bar beneath it."

Therefore windows is installed on your hard drive!

After a couple of seconds, the monitor goes into standby, and the installation seems to stop. All the fans and lights on the desktop are still on, but the CD drive won't open.

DO NOT SWITCH OFF it can be in this state for several (30) minutes while it completes loading files.

Like Fruit Bat /\0/\ says be sure you are not too impatient.

........ If you are still stuck:

Is the XP intallation the first time on an older computer or the first time on a new computer?

Asking this because I think there is a conflict or perhaps a component failure, or even something dislodged if you have added or changed anything before trying to install this OS.

I am sure you have tried this but make sure the disc is not dirty or scratched

Just an addon to my above post.

Anytime I have had a problem loading windows it has been an issue with my memory modules. Have you added any new memory or any new hardware for that matter?

  s99Raj 16:03 22 Dec 2007

I've tried installing onto a new hard drive.

The monitor goes into standby at the same point again on a clean hard drive.

I've tried leaving it in this state for 40 minutes but it stays that way.

I've cleaned the cd several times.

I've removed the memory modules and blown away any dust. I haven't added any new hardware recently.

It's on an old computer which had Windows on it it already, and I'm just trying to do a clean install.

Please forgive what is likely to be obvious.....
Have you sufficient RAM if the old computer ran on W98 for instance.

  s99Raj 16:15 22 Dec 2007

Yes, there's enough RAM as it has been running XP Home for 2/3 years since I bought it from new.
