at home i have Virgin broadband wireless and can access this on my laptop, but i cant access any other network on my laptop, say at a friends house or in a wifi spot.
Its nothing to do with passwords as it still doesnt work after i have entered them.
Does anyone know why, its driving me mad!

I think your best bet is to set up a second user account on your laptop and then run the setup on the host pc which often asks for a usb key to be inserted and info is sent to it. You then put the usb key in your laptop on the new account and with luck this account will connect to that wireless signal. I suggest the new user account to leave your original one unaffected.

Can you be more specific? When "connecting" to other networks, is the Wireless Network Connection getting its proper IP address?

I assume it hasn't been configured with a fixed IP address to connect to your own router at home? This would prevent it from connecting to any router that operates in a different Subnet (IP address range).
