Cannot setup a dial-up connection in XP

  tricky dicky 2 10:30 02 Jul 2004

Am trying to setup a connection on an XP Professional machine. It previously had NTL on and AOL (software removed with add/remove programs). checked modem diagnostics =OK, checked phone line =OK. Tried loading BT Yahoo disc but drops line when dialog box says connecting. Tried loading Tiscali disk, connects but then dies when loading the setup connection browser.
Can anyone help me?

Question: What port is the modem setup on. It should be on Com 3. If its not on Com 3 theres your problem.

To check open Control Panel then click on Phone and Modem then highlight the modem then click Properties then click the Tab Modem in Win XP the port is shown at the top just below the Tab.

If it says another Com Port uninstall then re install the modem making sure that you have the correct Modem Driver.

Also make sure you have Dial my Default connection enabled. You don't say weather or not your on Broadband or DSL

Haven't got XP, but try this. Go to "Make new connection" Put this number in (leave the Area Code blank) and enter the number 08451121212 in the Telephone Number box. When finished double click the connection and enter anything you like as the ID and anything you like as the password. If it doesn't work suspect your modem is faulty, get a new one.

That's because the thread title mentions a dialup connection...

Are you logged on as the administrator?

Otherwise key in Dialup Connection in Help and Support and you will find how to configure the connection from Network Connections.
