cannot play *.mid files

Have you checked Tools > Options > File Types and ensured midi is ticked?

Ben, reinstall WMP9 over itself, reboot & try playing a .mid file.

Does it have to be WMP to play them? Why not try JetAudio 6 Basic from click here

Plays almost anything (Audio/Video) you can throw at it.
