Can you mix different sizes of RAM?

Hi. I have just discovered 256 mb of DDR memory upstairs and I was wondering if you can mix it with 2 sticks of 512 mb memory?
All of the memory has the same speed namely 333 mhz (PC 2700).

I know that 1.5 Gb of RAM is a bit over the top but I may as well use it as it is gathering dust!
By the way I found it while going through my old PC stuff upstairs to try and help a friend out as explained in another post!

If it's the same speed it should work but the 256 needs to go in 0 or 1 slot whatever is the first, followed by the two 512's

Hi. I know what you are saying but I don't want to BUY any more just know if it is okay to add another 256 mb stick?
Oops! In my above post 1.5 Gb should read 1.25 Gb.

Hi. Why is this?
I wouldn't think it mattered.

I think you will find it will not see the 256 if you just put it in the empty slot

Thanks.

If I remember correctly, the higher value Ram should go in the slot nearest to the CPU i.e. 512, 512, 256.

Run Belarc or look in System Properties to ensure they are all recognised.

Good luck

I put it in and it works!
Under System the following is shown: 1.25 Gb
Thanks to all the above.
