I am using Windows XP Home. When I insert a CD, it will not start. It makes an effort but gives up. If I go to Start and Programmes etc. or My Computer it doesn't show as there being anything in my drive. DVDs play fine. Any advice please?
Thanks. Bixbox.

My understanding is that these drives have two separate read/write heads - one each for CD and for DVD. If I'm right then your CD heads either need cleaning or have blown. Cheap enough getting a replacement.

If DVDs are ok and CDs are faulty then it very much appears that the CD laser is dead.

Not worth trying to repair as DVD writers re so cheap nowadays.

Try uninstalling the drive and the IDE channel the drive is on. then reboot and let XP reinstall new hardware.

But don't hold out much hope.
