can i use faster ram on slower motherboard?

  cbradley857 12:52 11 Nov 2007

i currently have a computer with an Asus k8v-mx motherboard, with has 200mhz ram, but im going to upgrade to an ASUS M2N-E SLI

I plan to get 800mhz(pc2-6400) ram for this motherboard.
I havnt got the money for the motherboard at the minute, but i can get the ram, so my question is, can i use this ram on the slower motherboard until i have the money for a new one?

also, if i install a new motherboard, do i have to reinstall my os?

Depends on your processor speed

as far as I can see, the Asus k8v-mx, will only take ddr memory, (pc400) and will be no good for your new ram.

Memory will work fine in the new board, but without upgrade in the cpu will gain no significant performance hit..

Need to know what your upgrad3 plans are? :)

another computer in my house had been upgraded with ddr2 ram even though it was a ddr motherboard

at the minute i was only planning on getting ram, but in the future ill be getting a new cpu (athlon 64) and video card

i just want to get some extra ram that will work on my computer now, but will also work in the new motherboard, even if it only runs at the speed of ddr until then

DDR in your current board, DDR2 in the new one, no go.

Older memory that suits your current CPU...No point in spending more on stuff you don't need and can't use

Some boards have slots for both, not the ones you mention though;

A: DDR memory with support for DDR PC3200,DDR PC2700,DDR PC4000 speeds.

Because DDR memory is backward-compatible, you can safely upgrade your system with any of the guaranteed-compatible DDR speeds listed below, even if your manual calls for PC1600 or PC2100 speeds.

-does this apply to pc2-6400?

your older board will only accept ddr ram, and, not ddr2.
