if I have an ADSL modem downstairs and wireless router to connect to a second pc upstairs,is there any reason why a second ADSL modem upstairs would not work with the second pc instead of using the wireless router

Not if you want to use both at the same time. You can only establish one ADSL connection at any one time.

You can use 2 ADSL modems at the same time provided you have subscribed 2 ADSL connections. If not, would recommend you to get an Ethernet or wireless router to set up a wired click here or wireless network click here .
