Trying to recover a back up from an external USB drive using Acronis 2014. Acronis cannot read some sectors and suggests using a disk checking utility.

what op system?

usually from cmd prompt

chkdsk x: /f/r

where x is the letter of the drive to be checked.

CHKDSK running for last 20 mins, now on stage 4 with 2% completed. Is this normal?

You could try a program like recuver (free), this is usually good at recovering lost /corrupted files. You will need a second drive to recover them to (if it manages to find them)

Recuver

Finished at last and did find problems which it says it has repaired. I will try Acronis again.

Jock1e, I am currently trying to do the recovery so don't want to interrupt it. I also do not know the command to run scannow on an external drive, any help most welcome.

CHKDSK via USB2 will take time. See what Acronis can wobble up now.

"See what Acronis can wobble up now"

It has wobbled up a 55GB clone without showing any error messages this time but I cannot boot from it so I suspect an error when originally creating the back up. Don't know if this is fixable.

This might help if it's the MBR damaged.
