Can I fit a Really Big Hard Disk

  jonmac 19:43 08 May 2005

Belarc advisor reports my Bios to be ....American Megatrends Inc. 062710 07/15/97

Would there be any problem fitting a 200 Gb hard disk? I have Windows XP

I think as long as you have Service Pack 1 installed you should be okay as this fixes a 137 Gb limit.
Obviously SP2 would be better for security reasons!
If you have already got these service packs installed then you should be fine.

Thanks for the help, CurlyWhirly. That's what I wanted to hear. I have all the latest SPs and Critical Updates butI'll check at the shop to make sure when I go to buy.

Sorry to disagree, but you will have no chance with that bios. The bios for 97, is pre-windows 98. These bios's usually had limitations of 2 gig, 8.4 gig and 32gig. What hard drive have you at the moment.?

You would need to look at a PCI controller card or the hard drives software to have any chance of using a drive so large.

The fact that you are running XP has little to do with it. If the bios will no see the drive, no operating system will configure it.

Use it as an external disk and you will not have any problems.

If an external hard disk is an option. Then for £99 this may be an option, 250 gig + card reader + usb ports click here

The machine would probably need a USB2.0 card for optimal transfers, unless it has one all ready installed. A 97 bios may have usb on the motherboard but not usb2.0
