Cable/wireless networking

A quick question as part of my first foray into reading about PC networks. In connection with wireless networking - I'm confused by the small number of articles I've read so far as to whether or not it's possible to have a wire/wirelss hybrid network, or must you have one or the other? There seems to be some conflicting information about this from the small amount I've read so far.

Wireless router usually have 4 ports for wired connections.

I have 2 desk top PC's that connect to my router by wire and 2-4 laptops wirelessly (depending on who is visiting) all are networked with access to each other.
