c000021a Fatal system error

I'm using Win XP home SP2. My computer has suddenly started to have problems booting. It continually closes down during the windows start-up then tries to re-start. It gets past the WindowsXP logo but fails before the users icons appear. I tried in safe mode, no joy, it just shut down. Then I disabled automatic re-start and got a blue screen with the following message:
"c000021a Fatal System Error. Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status 0x00000402 (0x00000000 0x000000000) The system has shut down."
After giving up and going to bed I turned on the computer this morning and it started OK. Now I'm concerned about turning it off without having resolved this problem.

Try last known good configuration.

Sorry ignore that post, the problem is often caused by malware and I would suggest trying a system restore first.

Thanks for the help. The problem has not gone away, it just seems to be a lottery if the computer will start or not.

I don't seem to be able to set up Dr Watson as the system debugger. I've tried to set up Dr Watson as detailed in the link, but the command "System Root\System32\Drwtsn32.exe-I," is not recognised.

So I'm still no clearer as to what is causing this intermittent problem.

After looking at numerous "google" threads, I found one which linked this error to Nero InCD. I checked the Nero site and found an update for Nero6, which I've installed. I'm now just keeping my fingers crossed.

The update didn't make any difference. In the end I removed InCD and haven't had a problem since. I'm going to leave this thread open for a while (don't want to tempt fate)

This thread is now locked and can not be replied to.
