Bypass automatic updates (wga)

I have a little shield icon with a ! mark telling me that I should install a Windows Genuine advantage notification update. I'm not interested in installing this and want to get rid of it. I don't know if it will stay there and install automatically when I shut down like with some updates in the past.

Yesterday I went into the registry and deleted all "wga" entries to get rid of that pesky purple star icon that comes up every time windows loads up. I'm not sure if It will come back with this update. Any help appreciated.

It rather depends on whether you want Microsoft updates to you OS in the future?

OK, I have to install this (as a condition) to get other updates?

You might find this interesting, go down to options 3,4 & 5.

Go to Start<Control Panel<Security Centre, click on Automatic updates near bottom of screen and in the window that comes up you've got 4 choices.

However if your copy of XP is legit then you've nothing to worry about.

alan2273, thanks looks useful.

bluto, I don't know if its a genuine copy (don't really care tbh) because someone installed it for me a few years ago. I have checked the option notify but don't download.
