buying WinXP on Ebay

  chugby 19:21 20 Feb 2005

noticed their appears to be some good deals on ebay for Windows XP, but which one?
Appears to be various offers, some being OEM and ex-Dell, some with and some without certificate of authenticity and hologram stickers etc.
What do you need to have an authentic and valid WinXP OpSys which will allow tech assistance and updates? Any information on the requirements and info if anyone has bought/recommend a WinXP off ebay appreciated. thanks

If you want technical assistance, you need a retail version with an unused certificate of authenticity.

Ex Dell and so on do not always work. They are often "locked" to the machines they were originally supplied for, so beware. Furthermore, if the product key has already been registered, you will not be able to activate the operating system. Crying to Microsoft after the event, may provide some sympathy, but little else.

thanks for advise, some of the offers do seem to good to be true and think will stick to the retail version. Regards

The really true way to find out if your WinXP is authentic is to go through the sequence of downloading the newish Microsoft Antivirus programme. You have to authenticate your system and Uncle Bill will be watching.
